The Cabinet has approved an agreement between Malaysia and Ocean Infinity to search for MH370 for another year, from 1 July 2026 to 30 June 2027. Like the original 18-month agreement agreed last year, the extended contract still includes a condition that no payment will be received if the Boeing 777-200ER aircraft with 227 passengers and 12 crew members is not found.
The contract with US-based Ocean Infinity has been extended to cover the remaining 7,428.54 km² of the search area. In two previous 28-day missions, the missions only managed to search 7,571 km² of the 15,000 km² area believed to be the final location of MH370. If the aircraft is found, Ocean Infinity will receive a payment of $70 million (~RM 285 million).
The mystery of the disappearance of Malaysia Airlines flight MH370 while en route from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing on March 8, 2014, remains unsolved even after more than 12 years. Since the incident, several improvements to the aircraft tracking system have been introduced. The Iridium-Aireon satellite system now tracks the aircraft's location in real time, rather than every 15 minutes previously.
