OpenAI is launching its first hardware and it is not a phone or smartwatch as previously announced. Instead, it is the Codex Micro, an add-on keyboard designed specifically for use with Codex. This keyboard will go on sale starting July 15.
It has quick shortcut buttons that make it easy to access several Codex functions immediately. The Codex Micro was developed in collaboration with Work Louder and was shown at the AI Engineer World Fair. It has the same design as the Figma Creator Micro add-on keyboard that will be launched in 2023.
So technically the Codex Micro is not OpenAI's first real physical hardware because it is the result of a collaboration with a third company. OpenAI's first hardware that Jony Ive has touched is still being refined and it has been confirmed that it is not a smartphone like the iPhone.
