Tidal Begins Labeling AI-Generated Music, Denying It Streaming Royalties

The flood of artificial intelligence (AI)-generated music on streaming platforms is impacting human artists who can’t compete with machines that can generate hundreds more every day. Major streaming platforms are being urged to label AI music so that users have the option to support only human artists. Tidal announced this morning that fully AI-generated music on the platform will now be labeled.

At the same time, music without any human involvement will not receive any royalties from streaming on Tidal. In addition, any music that imitates an artist’s style will be removed. Users are also given the option to filter fully AI-generated music from appearing in the app.

Spotify introduced the Verified by Spotify label last month to differentiate human artists from AI. But AI artists can still earn revenue through royalties. Deezer has had an automatic AI music detection system that has prevented it from generating revenue to the detriment of human artists since April.
