Sony Confirms Bungie Layoffs of Large Number of Developers

Sony has today confirmed that a large number of game developers responsible for developing content for games like Destiny 2 and Marathon have been laid off today.

The announcement was made by Hermen Hulst, CEO of Sony's Studio Business Group, who said that all of the laid-off employees received an email regarding the matter today.

This is not a surprise if you've been following Bungie for the past few months. Previously, Bungie announced various content for Destiny 2 that was supposed to be released throughout the year, but it was later canceled as most of the developers were transferred to finish Marathon.

Meanwhile, several top executives at Bungie have also left the company, further clouding the situation for the company. Marathon also failed to maintain a high player base after its launch, and while the game has been improved, the number of games has never been as high as Destiny 2, which is now in its ninth year of operation.

Bungie has confirmed that no new content will be introduced for the game after the June 9 update, and with Sony's announcement of the layoffs, it somewhat confirms many rumors that have been circulating about the company. However, the Destiny 2 game service will reportedly remain active, albeit without any new content.

Sony and Bungie have not confirmed how many employees have been laid off, but estimates made by media outlets and analysts who have spoken to Bungie employees are as high as 55 percent.
