Retro Super Mario video game cartridges are among the most valuable video game cartridges today because many retro game collectors, especially those who have the money to buy cartridges in perfect condition.
And that's what happened recently, when it was reported that a Super Mario Bros video game cartridge with perfect stickers was auctioned for $3 million (~RM12 million). The cartridge also comes with a PSA 9.6 A++ grade graded by PSA, a company known for authenticating and grading the quality of hobby paraphernalia such as various TCG cards, comic book game cartridges and others for investment purposes.
According to Heritage Auctions, the party responsible for the auction said that the PSA 9.6 grade is the best grade given to this cartridge, due to how perfect the Nintendo sticker is and also the condition of the game cartridge box despite being about 40 years old. And this cartridge was also sold before Nintendo used plastic wrap for their video game cartridge boxes.
Apart from the video game cartridges, the same auction also featured an NES Control Deck game console, complete with box and all the manuals that came with the console when it was launched in 1985.
With a value of $3 million, the Super Mario Bros. cartridge auction is the most expensive game cartridge auction in the world to date.
