This morning I searched for a GIF of Kylian Mbappe cheering after scoring a goal because it is often used to celebrate France's victory. But when searching through X, this GIF did not appear and the GIF options in this application were also limited. This is strange but the mystery of the disappearance of GIFs this morning was answered through an announcement made by Google.
Google officially ended API support for the Tenor service used by various popular applications such as Discord, WhatsApp and Bluesky today July 1, 2026. The reason given is that it is part of a move to focus on resources in addition to improving the core product. Tenor GIFs can now only be accessed by Google-owned services such as Messages, and Gboard.
Last January, Google announced that it would no longer allow new registrations using the Tenor API. So the termination of access to the API of this popular GIF service is very disappointing for GIF fans like me. Tenor was acquired by Google in 2018. Now on various social media applications only GIFs from Giphy can be accessed with limited options.
