During the tabling of the 2025 Malaysian Budget, Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim announced the development of the Madani Submarine Cable Link Network or SALAM. The cable project will cost RM2 billion and will involve an undersea route from Sedili in Johor to Kuching and Sibu in Sarawak; then to Tuaran, Kudat, Pulau Banggi, Sandakan and Tawau in Sabah.
Recently, the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission said that the SALAM project will include 10 Cable Landing Stations connected via four submarine cable segments spanning 5,582km, a longer distance than the previously announced 3,190km.
SALAM will also be a strong and scalable domestic connectivity backbone to support the expansion of broadband services and 5G networks, while also helping to grow cloud infrastructure, data centres, AI technologies and new digital industries.
In this regard, MCMC has also begun inviting all eligible licensees to participate in the implementation of the project by submitting a Registration of Interest (ROI) along with a Draft Universal Service Plan for assessment, in accordance with Regulation 5 of the Communications and Multimedia (Provision of Universal Service) Regulations 2002.
