Music Industry Introduces AI Label to Protect Originality

The use of artificial intelligence (AI) in music is becoming increasingly widespread and commonplace in the industry. However, questions about the authenticity of the work have arisen because fans have the right to know whether the music they are listening to was truly created by humans or generated by AI. Without control and transparency, the use of AI risks undermining fans’ trust and eroding the value of human creativity in the music industry.

Recognizing the challenges of using AI in music, several major music industry organizations including A2IM, IFPI, RIAA, WIN, IMPALA, The Grammys, SAG-AFTRA and the Human Artistry Campaign have launched a new labeling system for music content produced with generative AI. This voluntary initiative aims to increase transparency in the use of AI and give fans confidence in how music recordings are produced.

The new label will distinguish between recordings that are fully generated by AI (AI-Generated) and recordings that are only assisted by AI (AI-Assisted). It also covers soundtracks produced under AI direction, but the lead vocals and important musical lines must be performed by humans. This measure is expected to become an international standard, including on music streaming platforms, to maintain trust and genuine relationships between artists and fans.
