Communications Minister, Datuk Seri Fahmi Fadzil today shared, “We should have an award, every year which platform commits the most sins for Malaysians. For scams (alone), Facebook (contributes) 53% (of the reported content), followed by TikTok 39%, and after that Threads 5%.
This was shared in parallel with the sharing of data regarding content that has been identified to be taken down since 1 January to 17 August 2026, involving more than 470,593 that were requested to be taken down on the social platform. Of this amount, 93% of the content was agreed to by the social platform to be taken down. Losses due to online fraud also reached RM958 million for the first six months of 2026.
Sharing further, 64% of the content involved gambling content, while 27% involved fraudulent content. The vast majority of the content requested to be taken down was on the Facebook platform.
In parallel, it was emphasized that social platforms need to be more proactive in curbing harmful content, and not just wait for reports from authorities. Previously, it was emphasized that it was like the government needed to monitor social platforms, rather than the platforms themselves doing it proactively.
