YouTube currently counts views when a user has watched a video for 30 seconds. This provides a better picture of how a video is viewed, but this will change soon.
According to YouTube, effective August 24, 2026, YouTube will count views when a video starts playing from the first second. This is expected to lead to a surge in views on a video on YouTube from now on.
YouTube stated that this change is in line with the implementation of the counting method on YouTube Shorts, as well as being adopted by a number of other video services, including TikTok.
However, YouTube stated that this change in view count will not affect the revenue generated. This is because revenue payments will still be based on “Engaged Watch Hours” as before.
