3 Ways to Protect Chat in the Signal Application

Following the update to WhatsApp’s privacy policy, many people have switched to other messaging apps, including Signal.

This app is predicted to be the most secure ordering app among other competitors. However, beyond the security features the app offers, there are a number of ways users can test their conversations on Signal.

1. Set the Notification Display

The message display on the notification that appears makes it easy for users to read the message briefly. However, for important messages that are personal in nature, this will definitely be considered leaked, if seen by others.

In addition, notifications that appear are often brought in by accident when users take screenshots outside of the Gestures app.

Fortunately, the Android and iPhone versions of Signal allow users to disguise the content of notifications as app settings. To hide the notification content in Alerts, open the app then tap the profile icon in the upper left corner of the screen.

Then, tap "Notifications" followed by "Show" under Notification Content. Next, several options will appear, such as Name, Content, and Action. This is the default setting, which does not hide anything in the notifications.

Only the Name will hide the content of the message but show from whom it originated.

No Name or Content will hide everything, including names and messages.

2. Peer Verification

Unlike other messaging apps, Signal allows a user to verify who he or she is talking to using a network of codes known as Security Numbers.

To view a conversation's 'Security Number', tap the contact's name at the top of the conversation and select 'View Security Number' on the next screen.

This can also be done by tapping the QR code to launch the camera to scan the chat partner’s number (or vice versa) to speed up the process. You can then mark the contact as verified using the button at the bottom of the screen.

Simply put, this will ensure that no people or interceptors occur between conversations. Of course, this will ensure the user has a conversation with the intended person.

3. Log out of Connected Devices remotely

So far Signal allows users to connect up to five additional devices to Signal in addition to the main device.

If some devices are located at a great distance, for example in another city, we recommend that users leave the device immediately.

Open Alerts and tap your user icon in the upper left corner of the screen. Tap "Connected Devices" and find the device you want to log out of remotely, scroll left, tap Unlink, then confirm the option to complete the logout process.
