Snapdragon Wear 5100, Qualcomm's Weapon for New OS Wear?

Qualcomm has stated that they will be releasing a new Snapdragon Wear chip, and it is now known that the chip will be called the Snapdragon Wear 5100.
The name comes from a line of code that appears on Qualcomm’s Code Aurora Forum, found by XDA Developers, in a build ID named ‘LAW.UM.2.0-00700-SW5100.0’.

The code ‘LAW’ is an abbreviation of ‘Linux Android Wear’, ‘UM’ is ‘Unified Modem’, and ‘SW5100’ is considered the name of the Snapdragon Wear 5100, which has the code ‘monaco’.

Not much detailed information about this chip. However, the available code indicates that the platforms supported by the Wear 5100 are based on Android 10 and 11. There is no specific mention of support for the unified Wear OS 3 platform.

But Qualcomm itself has previously stated that the Wear 3100, 4100+, and 4100 are capable of running Wear OS 3.0, which is the result of a combination of Wear OS and Tizen.

The Wear 5100 is a chip that has a quad-core ARM Cortex-A73 CPU, which is higher than the Cortex-A53 in the Wear 4100.

So far, no chips for smart watches from Qualcomm are satisfactory, and the Wear OS platform seems immature. That’s why the Wear 5100 is interesting to watch, whether it will live up to expectations or be the same as the previous chip.

Qualcomm previously mentioned that it will release a new chip next year. Then the chip will be used for the first time in a smartwatch coded 'Atherton'.

Google recently announced the name of its latest smartwatch operating system, Wear OS 3, which is a combination of Samsung's Wear OS and Tizen.

According to Google, only a handful of current smartwatches will get Wear OS 3. The update won’t be available until the second half of 2022.

Smartwatches that will get it include the Mobvoi TicWatch Pro 3 GPS, TicWatch Pro 3 LTE, TicWatch E3, as well as the Fossil smartwatch that will be released in 2021.
