Twitter Launches Super Follows, New Source Of Money For Creators

Twitter launched its newest monetization feature, Super Follows. This feature allows creators to earn money from followers who subscribe to get exclusive content.

Twitter first announced the Super Follows feature in February, and opened limited registration in June. The feature is now rolling out to certain accounts in the United States and is currently only available on the Twitter app for iOS.

As the name implies, this feature allows users to become super followers by paying a monthly subscription fee to get exclusive content from idol creators. For creators, this feature can be a new way for them to earn money from social media.

Accounts that are eligible to register for the Super Follows program can charge their followers a subscription fee of USD 2.99, USD 4.99, or USD 9.99 per month. Creators can then choose to send exclusive tweets to paid super followers, or regular tweets to all of their followers.

Followers who have paid the subscription fee will be marked with a Super Follower badge next to their username. This badge is displayed in replies so super followers can look different than regular followers.

Twitter says it will take a commission of 3% of the total revenue earned by creators, but this amount will also be deducted by 30% for commissions on Apple and Google in-app purchases. After creators earn a total of USD 50,000, Twitter will take a larger commission of 20%.

Currently the Super Follows feature is not available to all users. Creators wishing to join the program must register via the Monetization tab in the Twitter app and enter the waiting list.

Accounts wishing to register must also meet the criteria set by Twitter, namely having at least 10,000 followers, sending 25 tweets in the past month, and being domiciled in the US, as quoted from TechCrunch, Friday (3/9/2021).

Twitter users in the US and Canada will be able to follow creator accounts already registered as Super Follows, followed by users in other countries in the next few weeks. Currently Super Follows can only be accessed by creator accounts via the Twitter app for iOS, but support for Android and desktop is promised in the near future.

Super Follows is not the first monetization feature launched by Twitter. In May, Twitter introduced the Tip Jar feature that allows users to tip directly to their favorite creators.

Then last week they introduced the Ticketed Spaces feature which allows creators to sell tickets for their Spaces sessions. Whether these features will succeed or end up like Fleets being shut down in just a matter of months is still a question mark.
