Two months ago the US Department of Commerce issued an order to NVIDIA and AMD to stop selling artificial intelligence chips to Chinese companies. This is to prevent the technology from being misused for the purpose of producing military technology. Both companies complied with this directive but today NVIDIA also offers the NVIDIA A800 GPU specifically for the Chinese market.
The NVIDIA A800 can be used as a replacement for the NVIDIA A100 as long as it meets all the requirements set by the US Department of Commerce in that it cannot be reprogrammed to exceed the specified limits. The full A800 specs shared only show a reduction in NVLink connection speeds from 600GB/s to 400 GB/s.
So far the NVIDIA A100 has been used by the Perlmutter supercomputer which is the fastest in artificial intelligence capabilities and also HPC at the University of Nottingham Malaysia.
