Yesterday, the Malaysian government announced a ban on registering social media accounts for individuals under 16. This will be enforced starting January 1, 2026 through MyKad, passport or MyDigital ID verification. The reason given is to ensure the safety of underage users in Malaysia.
However, Deputy Communications Minister Teo Nie Ching said the government has no plans to punish parents or guardians who allow children under 16 under their care to open social media accounts.
He added that parents and guardians are still responsible for monitoring their children's internet use and educating them on safe habits when surfing the internet.
