Xiaomi continues to strengthen its position as a global technology leader with the Xiaomi Smart Factory, a high-tech smart factory that symbolizes the future of the smartphone manufacturing industry. Located in Changping Future Science City, Beijing, the facility is an important component of Xiaomi’s “Human × Car × Home” ecosystem strategy.
Major Investment for Future Manufacturing
Xiaomi Smart Factory is developed with an area of 81,000 square meters, 8 buildings have been planned and 2 buildings have been completed. With a total investment of RMB 2.4 billion (estimated RM 1.39 billion), the construction of this factory began in June 2021 and will be fully operational in February 2024.
Previously, Xiaomi Smart Home Appliance was opened this year in Wuhan, further accelerating the realization of Xiaomi’s “Human x Car x Home” smart product ecosystem strategy.
High-Precision Automated Assembly
One of the main features of Xiaomi's smartphone factory is its very high level of automation. The factory houses 11 production lines, with 100% automation in critical processes and an overall automation rate of 81%.
With the use of advanced automation technology, it has been able to produce over 10 million units of smartphones per year, with an average production time of only about 6 seconds per device. This is an extraordinary achievement in the electronics manufacturing industry.
Self-Developed Software & Hardware
Xiaomi also highlights its technological capabilities through in-house development of software and hardware. For hardware, 96.8% of the equipment used is the result of Xiaomi's own development, thus reducing dependence on external parties and improving quality control, thus demonstrating Xiaomi's own capabilities.
In terms of software, the factory uses 100% self-developed software, known as the Xiaomi Hyper Intelligent Manufacturing Platform (IMP). This platform automatically monitors every stage of factory operations, including production efficiency, product quality, and situation detection in case of any problems. The system is also capable of intelligent inventory management by automatically placing supply orders when stocks run low.
A Meticulous Process to Ensure Quality
To provide the best quality to users, Xiaomi Smart Factory applies seven key production processes starting with Surface-Mounted Technology (SMT) and Semi Assembly to ensure that the assembly and function of the motherboard meet technical standards. The Main Board Assembly (MBA) process then adds supporting materials to enhance the structural strength of the device before proceeding to the initial and full assembly stages.
Next, a thorough inspection is carried out through the Final Assembly Test (FAT) including several tests such as performance and long-term stability. The last process is packaging, which ensures that each device is in perfect condition before being shipped to users.
