Continuing their mobility agenda in Malaysia, today BMW introduced the BMW i5 model assembled at the Kulim, Kedah assembly plant and is also their first electric car to be assembled locally. This locally assembled model will also be marketed for the Asia Pacific region, and also brings several updates compared to last year's model imported from Germany.
Among the updates present for this locally assembled version of the BMW i5 are the M Sport Pro elements with 20-inch rims and M Sport disc brake system in dark blue metallic. The interior decoration is also now different, with BMW Individual Merino leather trim, different finishes on the steering wheel, seat belts and even the seats.
Completing the interior are 18 Bowers & Wilkins speakers, a curved BMW Curved Display which is a combination of a 12.3-inch instrument display and a 14.9-inch infotainment display. It also has a panoramic sunroof and a 490L luggage compartment.
In terms of performance, the BMW i5 is a rear-wheel drive electric motor with a power of 250 kW 340hp and 430 Nm of torque that can accelerate from 0-100 km/h in 6 seconds and can reach a maximum speed of 193 km/h. It also has a battery of 83.9 kWh that provides a travel distance of 627km WLTP. For fast charging, it is up to 205 kW allowing 10-80% charging in 34 minutes, while 22kW AC charging allows 0-100% charging in around 4 hours and 15 minutes. As a luxury electric car, the BMW i5 is also equipped with various other smart features such as Live Cockpit Professional, Connected Drive, level 2 self-driving system and also the BMW Drive Recorder recording system.
The BMW i5 eDrive 40 M Sport is priced at RM 368,800 and comes with a 5-year unlimited mileage warranty, including 5-year or 100,000 KM maintenance. The battery warranty is 8 years, and 6-year unlimited mileage maintenance. With the arrival of this locally assembled BMW i5, we will see more BMW electric cars being assembled in Kulim, Kedah in the future.
