X this morning announced that its feature for generating pornographic or indecent images using Grok will be blocked in several countries. The move comes after Grok was blocked in Malaysia and Indonesia and is under investigation in the EU, India and the United Kingdom because generating pornographic images without consent is a crime in these countries.
The feature for generating and editing images using Grok is currently only available to paid customers. The barrier for generating swimsuit images will be blocked using geofencing technology. This means that it can theoretically still be bypassed using a VPN.
X also said that it is working around the clock to add additional protections, taking swift and decisive action to remove infringing and illegal content. Accounts found to be at fault will be permanently suspended and that it will cooperate with local governments and law enforcement where necessary.
