Instagram Contacts Parents If Kids Search for Harmful Content

There’s a lot of good content on social media, but there’s also a lot of bad. One of the biggest challenges of raising kids in this crazy age is keeping them from engaging in self-harming activities. Today, Instagram is introducing a feature that will contact parents or guardians if a child in their care repeatedly searches for content related to suicide or self-harm.

Notifications are sent to parents or guardians via WhatsApp, SMS, or email, depending on the contact information provided by the parent. This feature will only work if the teen’s account is under parental supervision. Instagram is also providing support materials to help parents talk to their kids.

The feature is currently in its initial rollout in the US, UK, Australia, and Canada starting next week. Instagram plans to expand the feature to other regions by the end of the year.
