Malaysians Limited to Owning 5 Prepaid SIM Cards and Foreigners to Only 2

The MCMC has published new guidelines on the ownership of prepaid SIM cards today. For Malaysian Citizens/Permanent Residents/Temporary Residents, the SIM ownership limit is set at 5 SIM cards per individual per service provider.

For non-citizens, the SIM ownership limit has been revised to 2 SIM cards per individual per service provider. For users aged between 12-17 years, registration must be done by parents or guardians with their information and consent recorded. At the same time, children under the age of 12 cannot register to own their own prepaid SIM cards even with parental permission.

Meanwhile, for tourists visiting Malaysia, tourist SIM cards are limited to a maximum usage of 3 months with automatic termination after that period. With these guidelines, MCMC wants to combat online fraud syndicates that use prepaid SIM cards to carry out their illegal activities.
