Google started life as a search engine company in 1998. Their search algorithms more accurately brought up the information they were looking for, causing Yahoo, Altavista, Bing, Ask Jeeves, Lycos, and Infoseek to all become uncompetitive until some were buried like Ask Jeeves a few weeks ago. At Google I/O, Google once again brought seismic changes to the way information is searched for, and displayed in web browsers.
New, larger search box
Using the latest model Gemini 3.5, Google says Search is now becoming a more comprehensive AI search engine. The previously small and short Search box is now an AI search box that can understand context and support questions using common language. The same box uses autocomplete technology to suggest search prompts to get the most accurate answers.
Where before you had to know what question you wanted to ask Search, Search now suggests how to do a more detailed search with prompts instead of queries. AI Overviews are prominently displayed at the top, and users can then continue the question or topic conversation in AI Mode.
In AI Mode, alerts can be given and this is integrated into various other Google services complete with Personal Intelligence support.
Search Information Agent
The AI Search agent will replace Google Alerts. Just provide search parameters such as “notify me when Osmo Pocket 4 drops below RM2000 in Malaysia” and the AI Search agent powered by Gemini 3.5 will work non-stop in the background. When information is found, real-time notifications will appear on the phone screen.
Based on the demo shown on the Google I/O stage, it presents a dark future for content producers and website owners. Search no longer provides links to your site but a summary of information directly in AI Overviews. The informant does not receive any clicks. All the announced features are being given to all global users in stages today.
If in the past Yahoo, Altavista, Bing, Ask Jeeves, Lycos, and Infoseek were the victims, now the website is in the grave waiting to be pulled by Izrail.
