As rumored since April, Meta began laying off around 8,000 of its employees worldwide this morning as part of a global restructuring. The 10% layoff comes as the company focuses more on developing artificial intelligence (AI).
Meta Singapore employees began receiving layoff emails at 4am this morning, according to a Straits Times report. Employees in other countries such as the UK, America and elsewhere will receive their respective notices in stages, with employees instructed to work from home today in preparation.
The first restructuring was carried out two days ago, with 7,000 employees being reassigned to newly formed teams focused on AI initiatives, including products and agents.
Meta's focus on AI development has already led to staff being laid off as their jobs were taken over by AI. Meanwhile, Reality Labs staff were also laid off earlier this year as Zuckerberg's focus on developing the Metamesta world, headsets and games was no longer a priority, despite billions spent.
