Micron has just held its third quarter 2026 financial presentation, and according to the meeting minutes shown by them, the company expects that the supply issue of RAM and storage memory components is expected to continue until the end of 2027, when it is expected that the supply of components for AI data centers will stabilize.
Meanwhile, the production of memory and storage components for consumer devices is expected to gradually recover in 2028. This statement is seen as quite interesting because Micron withdrew from the production of RAM and storage components when they closed the Crucial brand earlier this year.
However, technically Micron still produces components for consumer devices as an OEM memory and storage chip manufacturer. However, their current focus is on the development and production of memory and storage components for the data center and AI sectors.
Since last year, Micron has acquired several component manufacturing plants and upgraded its own manufacturing plant in Singapore to meet the high demand for memory and storage components. In the meantime, it is also building its largest component manufacturing plant in New York, which will cost $100 billion and will produce 40 percent of the company's total production by 2040.
But Micron CEO Sanjay Mehrota's statement about memory supply for consumer devices starting to recover in 2028 may be more about the ID1 plant in Idaho, which is expected to start operating at full capacity in 2028.
Interestingly, we have also reported that SK Hynix is expected to start focusing on consumer memory component production after gaining a high market share in sales and demand for data center memory and AI hardware.
