Twitter Offers USD3500 For Algorithm Bias Detection

Twitter will give away $ 3,500 cash for those who get a biased example in its autocrop photo technology algorithm.
The program came about after many users complained that cropping a picture or photo loaded in a timeline preview suffered from biased automatic cropping.

It’s worth noting that Twitter first introduced a photo cropping feature in 2018. This function aims to highlight important areas in a photo by predicting where a person is most likely to be seen.

However, some users have criticized how Twitter's auto -crop feature tends to focus on lighter -skinned people in photos.

"In May, we shared our approach to identifying bias in our algorithm, also known as the image cropping algorithm. And we provided the code for others to reproduce our work," Twitter wrote in a blog post. Monday (2/8/2021).

“We want to take this job one step further by inviting and providing incentives to the community to help identify the potential dangers of this algorithm beyond what we know,” he added.

Twitter says that this is the digital industry’s first algorithm bias hunting contest and offers cash prizes of up to $ 3,500.

Rumman Chowdhury, Director of the Machine Learning Ethics, Transparency and Accountability Team, says the company believes that people should be rewarded for identifying these problems and not being able to do it themselves.

Winners will be announced at the DEF CON AI Village workshop hosted by Twitter on August 8th.
