Twitter Reopens in Nigeria After Troubled Delete President's Tweet

Nigeria lifted the ban on Twitter access, but on the condition that the microblogging service bearing the blue bird logo should only be used for business-related purposes and positive things.

Quoted from Bloomberg, Monday (4/10/2021) Twitter was initially banned in June by the Nigerian government after it was discovered that it deleted a tweet by Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari. At that time, Twitter did so on the grounds of violating its abuse policy.

The latest development of this case, the Nigerian Government said it was close to reaching an agreement with Twitter to be able to continue their operations.

"As a country, we are committed to ensuring that digital companies use their platforms to improve the lives of our citizens, respect Nigerian sovereignty, cultural values, and promote online safety," Buhari said in his speech.

Twitter was banned in the country following Buhari's tweets threatening to punish separatists suspected of attacking government buildings. At the time, Twitter expressed deep concern about Nigeria's actions and said that open internet access is an important human right.

Facebook, Twitter, Apple, and other tech giants often walk a fine line between promoting internet freedom and complying with local laws.

Apple, for example, was recently accused of giving the Chinese government control over local data. But at the same time, the company is also railing against similar actions in the United States and in a number of other countries.
