Japanese Man's Marriage With Hatsune Miku Challenged After Gatebox Support Stopped

In 2016, Gatebox was launched in Japan to allow otaku to interact with virtual wata. Hatsune Miku is among the virtual characters offered with users using voice commands to interact like real human beings. But Akihiko Kondo, a Japanese man took another step forward when he married his virtual girlfriend four years ago.

But this “marriage” was challenged as he was no longer able to interact with his wife following the Gatebox developer stopping support for the device during the pandemic. While virtual daily interactions with Hatsune Miku are no longer possible, Akihiko said he is still happy and will remain faithful to his virtual wife until the end of his life.

In Japan the relationship between humans and fictional characters is not uncommon. Many who grew up watching animated series have more attraction to it than real humans.
