The use of artificial intelligence (AI) is now becoming more widespread, not only in daily life but also in religious matters. Most recently, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Egypt are exploring cooperation in the field of fatwas by leveraging digital technology and AI. This effort aims to assess the potential of AI in delivering relevant fatwas in line with the complex issues facing modern society.
The discussion involved the Chairman of the General Authority for Islamic Affairs, Endowments and Zakat of the UAE, Dr Omar Habtoor Al Darei, and the Grand Mufti of Egypt, Dr Nazir Mohammed Ayyad. In addition, it was attended by the Chancellor of Mohamed bin Zayed University for the Humanities, Dr Khalifa Mubarak Al Dhaheri; Acting Secretary-General of the UAE Fatwa Council, Dr Sabaa Salem Al Kaabi; and several religious officials from both countries.
So far, the method of using AI in delivering fatwas has not been fully detailed. In theory, AI has the potential to increase accuracy and efficiency in answering religious questions and analyzing the needs of society so that fatwas are more relevant.
However, its use needs to be handled carefully. The accuracy of data and the validity of legal sources are very important to avoid confusion. Collaboration between religious experts and technology is needed so that AI functions as a support tool, and not a substitute for religious authorities.
Previously, the former Mufti of WP also introduced ‘Ustaz AI’ and ‘Ustazah AI’ as an initiative to help answer religious concerns. It shows that the use of technology in this field is not new.
